G.R. (Bob) Gilmore came to Fulton
from Mexico, Missouri, January 1, 1936. He first worked as a
salesman for W. Scott Fox Motors, located on Market Street in Fulton,
selling Studebaker and Packard. Then, in 1938, Mr. Gilmore
and Alfred Danuser formed a partnership and sold Desoto and
Plymouth in a building they built on Sixth Street in Fulton. The
firm name was Danuser-Gilmore, later Danuser Motors.
This partnership was dissolved
shortly after World War II in 1947. At this time, Bob
Gilmore and the Wise Brothers, Owen (brother-in-law of Bob), J.O.
(nephew of Bob) and Lowell (brother of Owen), of the McCredie-Stephens
area bought the service station and surrounding land located on Smith's
Branch at the corner of 13th Street and Business 54 North from Earl and
Maria Brown. They then built the Gilmore and Wise auto dealership
on that location (where it is still located today), selling Dodge and
Plymouth cars and trucks. The Wise Brothers had originally sold
Dodge and Plymouth at their location on Old Highway 40, seven miles west
of Kingdom City, MO.
In 1948, Mr. Gilmore bought out the
Wise Brothers and the name changed to Gilmore Motor Company.
Gilmore Motors also sold Massey Harris , later Massey Ferguson farm
machinery until 1962.
Business grew and the building and
used car lots expanded. Mr. Gilmore's son, Don, entered into the
business with his father in September, 1965. They worked closely
together with Don becoming a full partner in 1974. On December 31,
1977, Don Gilmore bought out the partnership and became sole owner of
Gilmore Motors.
G.R. Gilmore became ill in 1979 and
passed away November 18 of that year. He had devoted forty-three
years to the automobile business.
In the late summer of 1980, when
Alfred Danuser of Danuser Motors retired, Gilmore Motors acquired the
Chrysler and Plymouth franchises beginning with the 1981 model
year. Then, in 1998 Gilmore Motors acquired the Jeep franchise,
completing the full line of Chrysler Corporation products.
There are some conflicting
dates regarding the beginnings of Gilmore Motor Company. According
to Chrysler's records, the inception date for the dealership was June
15, 1941. Therefore, in 2001, Chrysler Corporation presented
Gilmore Motors with a 50 year plaque, commemorating their longstanding
franchise. This year, 2007, marks the 66th anniversary of Gilmore
Motors. Technically, this year would mark 68 years in the
automobile business for the Gilmore family.
Today, Gilmore Motors continues the
family tradition of a small-town dealer. Don Gilmore's son, Brad,
has entered the business, making him the third generation of Gilmore
Motors.
